CPS Energy Celebrates 75 Years

This year marks our 75th anniversary of being owned by the city of San Antonio. That’s 75 years of providing safe, reliable, and affordable electric and gas services to the Greater San Antonio community. While we have been in existence since 1860, October 24, 1942, marks the day that every citizen of San Antonio became the investors and direct benefactors of CPS Energy. And we’ve come a long way since then! The original purchase price was $34 million and the return on our community’s investment has been $7 billion and reliable and affordable power.

Our history actually dates back to just a few decades after the Battle of the Alamo and we’ve been a strong community partner ever since.

Our first event that took place on January 24 was a company-wide Employee Breakfast Celebration in which I, along with our Board Members, Chiefs and other Executives visited and served breakfast to over 22 locations throughout our company. Mayor Ivy Taylor was one of the many distinguished guests at the downtown main office breakfast celebration. During her speech, the Mayor highlighted CPS Energy’s strong commitment to our community and expressed her gratitude for our employee’s hard work and dedication while also citing the importance of our revenue that makes up one-third of the city’s general fund. Other distinguished guests included Councilman Roberto Treviño, District 1 and Councilman Rey Saldaña, District 4.

The 75th Anniversary celebration won't end with our Employee Breakfast Celebration. It will be commemorated with a year-long calendar of events, activities and innovative initiatives.

Below is a sneak peak of recent and upcoming events:

  • On January 31, CPS Energy hosted our Inaugural Future of Energy Symposium. During the symposium, we discussed new energy ideas on national and global stages, and talked about what we’re doing here at CPS Energy to ensure that our customers reap the benefits.
  • In April, we unveiled our 75th Anniversary Fiesta medal.
  • On May 5 - 6, we hosted the APPA Lineworker’s Rodeo at our very own employee park!
  • During the first weekend in June, we hosted our United Way Golf Tournament, and competed in the city-wide annual Corporate Cup Challenge.
